The Soviet-Afghan War 1979-1988

This is a very well put together documentary detailing the the Soviet war on Afghanistan that was launched by the Soviet Union in an effort to deter Iran's Islamic Revolution from spreading into Afghanistan, which was then a communist-run Soviet ally. The Islamic mujahideen resistance was heavily backed by the United States, who, at the height of the cold war, feared the expansion of Soviet communism. The United States readily supplied munitions to Islamic militant nationalists who were fighting the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Among other things, this video highlights the often overlooked political-historical connection between the U.S. and radical Islam. The Soviet-Afghan war has profound parallels with the current U.S. war on Iraq as well as the U.S. war on Afghanistan, and these very significant linkages are all too often overlooked or ignored in current media analyses of the Middle East crisis. Duration: 36 minutes
