Aljazeera reports that approximately 100 people died on Sunday when a plane departing from the Nigerian capital city Abuja crashed into a field about two kilometers from the runway. Among the crash victims was the Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammadu Maccido. Maccido was the most senior traditional ruler of northern Nigeria and the revered spiritual leader of Nigeria's 70 million Muslims.
The five initial survivors of the crash were reportedly rushed to a hospital, and two of them were said to be in critical condition. According to the Financial Times, the crash was Nigeria's third major aviation catastrophe in just over a year.
