So I am presenting some of my work, or at least some of my thoughts about my work, at a conference in San Francisco this weekend. The theme of the conference is Ecosexuality and Environmental Activism. Ecosexuality is not my field or specialty, but my friend and colleague Beth Stephens, who is one of the lead organizers of the conference, asked me to present something and said that it was meant to be fun so I caved in and agreed to participate. I am doing my dissertation on environmental justice advocacy so it didn't seem like too much of a stretch. Beth is an Art professor at UC Santa Cruz. She and I initially met after discovering via Donna Haraway that we had a common interest in the Anti-Mountaintop Removal Movement in southern Appalachia. She organized this event with her partner Annie Sprinkle. Beth actually helped bring Larry Gibson, whom I met about a decade ago on Kayford Mountain to UC Santa Cruz where he spoke about the anti-MTR movement. Annie and Beth are an awesome couple and I very much look forward to seeing them again. I am going to be talking about the history and practice of environmental justice advocacy on the Saturday evening panel. I am also going to talk about the history of EJ advocacy in Silicon Valley, as well as a some of the research I have been doing with the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. Here is the website for the event:
